More about this Workshop/Service and the Provider

Winchester Science Centre is the South of England's interactive science and technology centre with the largest standalone planetarium in the UK. Open 7 days a week, we provide exciting, hands-on science experiences to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of great scientists!

With two floors of fascinating, interactive science exhibits, stunning South Downs National Park surroundings and a vibrant events programme, the Science Centre makes for a brilliant action-packed family day out whatever the weather!

The ultimate STEM school trip is here!

We are delighted to offer schools an incredible all-inclusive experience guaranteed to spark curiosity and ignite passion and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). We have developed a bespoke package for KS1 - KS3 that includes a themed workshop and live planetarium show led by the Curiosity Team, and an interactive space challenge and time for students to explore the hands-on exhibition.

Planning your school visit just got easier

Our new all-inclusive approach to school visits means every school trip will include each of the following activities:

  • Discover Workshop - choose from six curriculum-linked themes
  • Planetarium Show - a new presenter-led, live show featuring the stars and planets adapted to meet the needs of the age group
  • Space Challenge - a self led mission through Explorer:Space, a new interactive exhibition zone (opened summer 2018)
  • Explore the exhibits - students can use any additional time to enjoy the much-loved hands-on exhibition.

The workshop and planetarium show will be adapted to suit the age and ability of your group. All workshops are available for KS1 - KS3 but are best suited to the key stages listed below.

Once you have decided on the Discover Workshop you'd like, please contact us using the contact form below. A member of the team will contact you to confirm your booking.

Choose your Discover Workshop

1. Discover: Destination Space KS2

Children can discover the secrets hidden in starlight on this astronomical adventure! Taking inspiration from the eagerly anticipated launch of the Webb Telescope, the teams of young astro-engineers will carry out experiments to see how best to direct and deflect light in space.

2. Discover: Life KS2 - KS3

A mysterious bacteria is killing schools of fish! Teams of budding biologists will use scientific knowledge and problem solving skills to find a cure. The children will explore other causes of fish depreciation by playing a plastic pollution game, and discover how plastic is spreading across our oceans.

3. Discover: Matter KS1 - KS3

Children will investigate the three main states of matter, and a mysterious "matter in the middle" that behaves rather peculiarly! This sticky sensory workshop will see each child create two versions of slime that they can stretch, twist, and even bounce!

4. Discover: Robots KS2 - KS3

Who is smarter... a human or a robot? Students will find out as they program robots to follow their instructions. By the end of this workshop, the teams should have the confidence and coding skills to take part in a robot catwalk, complete with spins and a rainbow light display!

5. Discover: Rockets KS1-KS3

Teams of budding engineers will learn all about forces with our fast and fun rocket workshop. The children will build, test and improve their rockets, then watch them launch across the room, powered by fuel and fire!

6. Discover: Sound KS2-KS3

This loud and interactive workshop explores how we hear and process sound. Using a variety of weird and wonderful gadgets, children will experiment with volume, pitch and frequency. With their new knowledge and a wave of inspiration, children can reinvent themselves with differently positioned ears!

7. Discover: Heart Heroes KS1 and KS2

Exploring the amazing power of the heart and how we can keep ours healthy. Featuring augmented reality T-shirts, 3D anatomical models and an optional animal heart dissection.
