Visit Sony UK Technology Centre

Part of our commitment to the local community is to inspire the next generation of engineers, entrepreneurs and creative talent. Aware of our role within the community we actively encourage the use of our facilities by schools and local groups including regular tours of the manufacturing facility.

Regular Educational Visits

At Sony UK TEC we host regular school visits and since 2012 we have opened our doors to over 10,000 children of all ages. In addition we have regular visits from colleges and universities from across the UK and even welcomed some international students from France and Italy. These visits are aimed at sparking an interest in technology and manufacturing, and to help develop the technological understanding of the innovators of the future.

Digital Competency Programme

9:45am - 2:15PM

Of the programmes we offer to primary schools, the Digital Competency Programme is the most thorough. It is aimed at Years 5 and 6. With activities running across two days, it focuses on developing two different sets of skills - creative and STEM. Day one encourages the former as the children take part in ‘Film in a Day’, using Sony Cameras and green screens to direct and create a short film. The second day is more industry specific, consisting of a presentation, factory tour and a coding workshop. The tour gives an insight into how a manufacturing plant operates day-to-day, and is complimented by the coding workshop where the children get to delve in to the technology that drives operations.

Learn 2 Code

9:45am - 2:15pm

For primary schools purely interested in coding, we at Sony UK TEC offer a one day coding workshop, which covers a variety of different areas and can be tailored to the abilities of the school attending. This is aimed at years 4-6.

All of our coding workshops are led by Steven Lewis, a fully qualified coding instructor. When asked about his experience running these classes, he said:

"I’ve found the workshops give the children an insight into their own creativity by using a variety of platforms to teach STEM skills outside of the classroom environment.

The programme uses games such as Minecraft to introduce the pupils to various programming languages including Scratch and Python, which they would not normally encounter as part of the school curriculum.

It’s fantastic to see the excitement and thrill that the children experience when they go from their first beeps to a complete soundtrack using Sonic Pi in only a few minutes, or when they ask if they can add another component to their circuit ‘to see what happens.

As teachers, it’s fantastic to see this enthusiasm, but the programme has the greatest impact on the children themselves. I bumped into a parent whose child attended one of the first Raspberry Pi coding days and found out that her daughter is now studying Computer Science GCSE. This is the kind of impact we want to see".

General Educational Visit

1:15pm - 2:15pm

This is the shorter of the visits, and involves a presentation, factory tour and a guest speaker for older children if applicable. This is offered to all levels of education, from primary and comprehensive schools to colleges and universities, and gives a general overview of what we do and what makes us so successful here at Sony UK TEC.

If you would like to organise a visit to our facility, or to find out more information please contact our team at ukteceducationalvisits@sony.com

Before making a booking please note the following:

  • Please be advised to book ahead in advance to ensure you secure a visit.

EESW School Visit Programme

The Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) is a non-profit, educational charity which runs programmes across Wales to inspire and motivate young people to choose a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).  Their programme is one of a number of educational programmes which Sony UK TEC supports, with the aim of introducing the manufacturing and technology industry to young people. We are pleased to be part of such a excellent programme, inspiring the next generation engineers, scientists and technologists.

Ospreys Schools Programme

As one of the four pillars behind Ospreys in the Community, the Ospreys Schools Programme supports the education aims of the foundation. Sony UK TEC supports this programme by providing pupils with the opportunity to learn about local engineering prospects and see the latest technology as it’s built. To learn more about the programme please visit the Ospreys website here
