More about this Workshop/Service and the Provider

Monkton Wyld Court is an educational charity that provides courses in sustainable living and related subjects, and finances its educational activities by running a vegetarian Country Guest House.

  • We host educational stays and eco-conferences for schools

The Grade II listed Neo-Gothic Court was built in 1848 as a Rectory. In 1940, pioneering educators Carl and Eleanor Urban established a co-educational boarding school here to promote cooperative living and learning.

Although the original Monkton Wyld School closed in 1982, the importance of farming and other practical skills and a focus on low impact living and sustainability have become central to our ethos.

Our Activities

From courses in herbal medicine to scything, yoga to hedge laying and cob and straw bale natural building, Monkton’s programme promotes courses in low-impact and eco landbase skills for changing modern life.

As well as our popular workshops and educational activity weeks, we continue to develop our programme of skills for sustainable living such as eco-building, green technologies, sustainable land use and environmental arts and crafts.

Our Location

We are located in the hamlet of Monkton Wyld, amidst the rolling hills of Dorset and within walking distance of the stunning Jurassic coast. Our main building is a  Grade II listed rectory built in 1848 as an early Victorian example of neo-Gothic architecture inspired by Pugin. The house accommodates up to 42 visitors in a variety of rooms. The communal areas, offering period features and wonderful panoramic views of the countryside, are heated by wood-burning stoves. There is a hall with stage and sprung dance floor, a beautiful sitting room with grand piano, an outdoor area with fire-pit, kitchen and classroom, a small fully-licensed pub and a shop selling chocolate, wine, postcards, natural toiletries and other essentials. Our eclectic and well-stocked library is also available by arrangement.

Our grounds include terraced lawns, a small wood, an orchard, fields leading down to a stream and an inspiring Victorian walled vegetable garden. Our water comes from our own wells and our waste water is processed through our wetland filtration system. We also use as much solar energy as possible.
