LAB RASCALS - ABOUT US!
Lab Rascals is the original Hull, Northern Lincolnshire and East Riding science party and outreach company. Lab Rascals was established in 2012 with support from the University of Hull. The idea for Lab Rascals was a result of years of research conducted at the University of Hull by director Katie Norman, alongside Prof. Mark Lorch. The research looked at the impact of “wiz bang” science show on secondary school children. The results showed “wiz bang” shows put many children off science due to the danger aspect associated with them. Other research conducted was to determine how to engage the most children into science. The results showed hands on experimentation was highly favoured over other forms. The hands on experiments have to be something children would not normal do at home or school with little mess or smells. Believe it or not several children don’t like getting messy hands or cloths and they hate the smell of vinegar.
Our parties and school workshops are designed based on this research. All our experiments are designed and developed by our scientists with a little help from children and not taken out of textbooks. Our risk assessment are highly detailed and assessed by health and safety professionals.
The development of lab Rascals took two years before the company began trading in 2012. Katie is extremely proud of her work and prides herself on delivering a high quality professional service. Katie has won several business awards over the years and continues to develop the business to find new ways to engage the next generation of scientists. Over the past several years global companies in the area have started to use Lab Rascals to deliver their events and school programmes due to the level of quality and experts provided. Alongside this Katie has invested in a state of art planetarium system and hired an expert in astronomy to design and deliver unique high quality space shows. Katie also helps masters and intern students with science education projects and science outreach work from the University of Hull. Katie is extremely passionate about inspiring the next generation and helping others to become outstanding science outreach role models and teachers.
Lab Rascals is an established SME business, fully insured, registered with companies house, VAT registered, recognised by the national STEM organisation, deliverers high quality events and designs all experiment and planetarium shows.
OUR OBJECTIVES
- To inspire and engage children in to science and engineering at a young age via fun hands-on experimentation.
- To change the negative perception of science being all “flashes and bangs” which most children associate with danger.
- To encourage children into science and engineering careers with is vital for the future growth of the UK economy.
